The Mental Health rights campaigning organisation MAD PRIDE which uses music and poetry as a means to challenge prejudice and stigma against people given negative mental health labels, is bringing its ‘traditional’ ‘Celebration of Creative Lunacy’ for World Mental Week back to it’s original ‘home’ venue THE IVY HOUSE in Nunhead, on SATURDAY 12th OCTOBER.

This event will be something of a special anniversary as it will mark the tenth of these annual events, with the first of these being staged at the IVY HOUSE in October 2004.

Like the first ‘Celebration of Creative Lunacy’ this will be an all day event featuring a stunning variety of original and unusual musicians, bands and poets, all of the highest quality (a ‘trade mark’ that MAD PRIDE have built a reputation for). All of this will be at the bargain price of only £5 / £2 admission, in keeping with MAD PRIDE’s policy of keeping admission prices low in order to ensure that our events are accessible to those struggling on low incomes and benefits.

The majority of the ‘Celebration of Creative Lunacy’ events over the years have taken place at the IVY HOUSE, some of these being staged in partnership with the sadly demised and much missed high profile Camberwell based mental health arts Charity ‘Creative Routes’, known for the staging of the legendary ‘BONKERSFEST!’ (in which MAD PRIDE was an active ‘partner’ organisation), and the also much missed, semi regular, ‘Muses Cafe’ events.

However it became something of a ‘movable feast’ over the past few years, as we were unable to get the use of the IVY HOUSE. THE IVY HOUSE has remained a favourite venue for this event and MAD PRIDE are very pleased to be able to return to our ‘old turf’ for this special occasion.

For a while it looked as though the venue had been lost to us entirely when, after a series of management changes it was put up for sale, with prospective purchasers seeking to close it down as a venue for live music events. This would have been a great loss as it had a longstanding reputation as a venue as far back as the 1960’s, when it was known as the Down ham Tavern, and has featured artists of legendary status such as The Pink Floyd and The Pogues in the past.

We were pleased when we heard that the venue had been bought by a co-operative of local people who were keen to ensure it remained open as a music venue. We immediately got in touch to enquire about the possibility of getting a date booked there in October for this years ‘Celebration of Creative Lunacy’ event.

We have to thank the good people now running the IVY HOUSE for the offer of the free use of the venue for this much valued and much loved community event, this would not be possible without this gesture of goodwill and support as MAD PRIDE has no funding or sponsorship beyond what we can make on the door at our events.

As previously we will be featuring a mixture of some local artists with some established local following and some artists from further afield which we think South London audiences would appreciate the chance to see locally.

The event will feature a mixture of ‘survivor’ artists, with personal experience of mental health difficulties and professional and semi- professional artists and musicians who may not have had direct experience of mental health problems but know or care about people that have, or understand the importance of ‘creative lunacy’.

Some of the artists performing for us have performed at previous ‘Celebration of Creative Lunacy’ events, (some were even featured at the first one of these at the IVY HOUSE), others have performed at MAD PRIDE events in this or other venues, one or two are entirely new to the MAD PRIDE stage. We want to thank all of our performers for performing without a fee and only basic minimum expenses; again without this we would not be able to stage this event.

MAD PRIDE is a non profit making organisation, all monies raised on the door will be ploughed back into the organising and running costs for the event, any monies generated above costs will be used to ensure future ongoing MAD PRIDE events can happen and into our vital campaigning and awareness raising activities.

Food will be available on the day and people can come and go for various parts of the day without having to pay a re admission charge, so this means it is an even more reasonably priced event.

Doors will open at noon, with the first act scheduled to be onstage by 1pm (come early to avoid disappointment), noise restrictions on the venue mean all performers will need to finish by 11pm, but this means it will be easier for those who have to travel a distance to get home without having to miss the later acts.

THE IVY HOUSE is accessible by public transport from various parts of London, previous events there have drawn in crowds from far afield. It is located nearby to Peckham Rye Common and is served by the 343 and 484 bus routes from London Bridge, Peckham Rye / New Cross and Denmark Hill, Dulwich / Lewisham and thus has transport links to many other parts of London. Parking in the area is limited however.

We look forward to seeing you on the day to join us in celebrating this ‘milestone’ of the tenth ‘Celebration of Creative Lunacy’ for World Mental Health Week and help to make a very special event.
